A comprehensive study released by the National Center for Education Statistics reveals that K-12 math proficiency scores are recovering significantly faster in states that invested in high-dosage tutoring programs following pandemic-era learning loss. States like Tennessee and Texas saw 8-point gains on the NAEP assessment.

The research tracked 2.4 million students across 38 states over two academic years. Schools that provided at least three tutoring sessions per week showed twice the improvement of those offering only weekly sessions, underscoring the importance of frequency and consistency.

However, the report also highlights an ongoing challenge: recruiting and retaining qualified tutors. Several states have addressed this by partnering with education colleges to offer practicum credit to student teachers who serve as tutors.
