Community college enrollment across the United States has risen 15 percent for the fall 2025 to spring 2026 academic year, reversing a decade-long decline. The surge is attributed to rising four-year university costs, expanded transfer agreements, and new free tuition programs in 12 states.
The American Association of Community Colleges reports that the largest gains are in health sciences, information technology, and skilled trades programs, all of which align with current labor market demands.
Transfer rates to four-year institutions have also improved, with 62 percent of students who complete associate degrees now continuing to bachelor's programs, up from 51 percent five years ago.
