The most selective U.S. universities have posted their lowest acceptance rates ever for the Class of 2030, with some dropping below 3% for the first time.
The Numbers
- Harvard: 2.8% (down from 3.2%)
- MIT: 2.9% (down from 3.4%)
- Stanford: 3.1% (down from 3.5%)
- Columbia: 3.3% (down from 3.7%)
- Yale: 3.5% (down from 4.0%)
Why It's Happening
Application volumes continue to surge thanks to the Common App and test-optional policies. Harvard received over 68,000 applications for approximately 1,900 spots. International applications are up 35% from pre-pandemic levels.
What This Means for Students
Admissions counselors emphasize that getting rejected from a top school is now closer to a lottery than a meritocracy. Students should build balanced college lists with safety schools they'd genuinely be happy attending.
The good news: excellent education is available at hundreds of schools, not just the Ivy League. State flagship universities offer outstanding programs at a fraction of the cost.
