Khan Academy announced the expansion of its Khanmigo AI tutoring assistant to six new languages, bringing the total to 14 languages supported on the platform. The newly added languages are Hindi, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Tagalog, and Urdu, chosen based on user demand and the size of underserved student populations globally.
Khanmigo provides real-time, conversational tutoring that guides students through problems using the Socratic method rather than simply providing answers. The AI tutor is now available across math, science, and humanities courses for students from elementary through college level. Khan Academy said the multilingual expansion was made possible by improvements in large language model performance across non-English languages.
The nonprofit organization is offering Khanmigo free to all students in Title I schools in the US and to students in developing nations through partnerships with local education ministries. Khan Academy founder Sal Khan said the goal is to provide every student on the planet with access to a personal tutor, regardless of their economic circumstances or the language they speak at home.
