The maximum Pell Grant award has increased to $7,895 for the 2026-2027 academic year, up from $7,395 in the previous year. This is the largest single-year increase in a decade.
Who Gets the Maximum?
Students with a Student Aid Index (SAI) of zero or below receive the full $7,895. Generally, this means families with adjusted gross income under $30,000. However, family size and number of children in college also affect eligibility.
Partial Pell Grants
Students with SAI between 1 and approximately 6,500 receive partial grants. Even families earning $60,000-$70,000 may qualify for some Pell Grant funding, especially with multiple children.
Using Pell Grants Effectively
- Pell Grants don't need to be repaid — they're free money
- Can be used for tuition, fees, room, board, books, and transportation
- If grant exceeds tuition, you receive a refund check
- Available for up to 12 semesters (6 years of full-time enrollment)
File your FAFSA to determine eligibility — many students who qualify don't apply.
