A major expansion of federal and state scholarship databases has made it easier for students to identify and apply for financial aid, helping to access an estimated $3 billion in scholarships that go unclaimed annually. The new unified portal launched in March 2026.

The ScholarshipFinder.gov platform aggregates over 200,000 scholarship opportunities from federal agencies, state governments, private foundations, and corporate sponsors. Students create a single profile and receive personalized matches based on their demographics, interests, and academic achievements.

The platform uses AI matching technology to connect students with obscure scholarships they might never have found through manual searching. Early data shows that users receive an average of 45 matched scholarships, compared to the 5-10 that students typically find on their own.

Particularly notable are the thousands of small, local scholarships — often $500 to $2,000 — that have low application rates. These awards may not individually cover tuition but can collectively provide significant support when stacked together.

High school counselors report the platform has been transformative, particularly for first-generation college students who lack family networks with knowledge of financial aid opportunities. Mobile app access ensures students in under-resourced communities can use the tool.
