The Department of Education has confirmed that the maximum Pell Grant award will increase to $8,500 for the 2026-2027 academic year, a $775 increase over the current maximum. The boost reflects congressional action to tie Pell Grant amounts to inflation.

Approximately 7.2 million students are expected to benefit from the increase, which covers a larger share of tuition and living costs at public colleges and universities. Eligibility criteria remain unchanged from the prior year.

Financial aid experts recommend that students complete their FAFSA applications as early as possible to maximize their total aid package, as many state and institutional grants operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
