Major online education platforms are reporting a significant increase in enrollment for skilled trades programs during the first quarter of 2026. Platforms including Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning have seen a combined 40 percent year-over-year increase in registrations for courses covering HVAC, electrical work, plumbing, and welding fundamentals.

The trend reflects growing awareness of high-paying career opportunities in the trades amid a national shortage of skilled workers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the U.S. will need 1.2 million additional tradespeople by 2030, with median wages in many specialties exceeding $65,000 annually.

While online courses cannot replace hands-on apprenticeship experience, educators say they serve as an effective entry point for career changers. Many programs now include virtual reality simulations and partnerships with local trade unions that provide pathways to in-person training and certification.
