More than 300 school districts across the United States have adopted AI-powered tutoring systems for mathematics instruction this academic year, according to a new report from the Consortium for School Networking. The platforms use adaptive algorithms to personalize lesson difficulty and pacing for individual students in real time.
The most widely adopted platform, Khanmigo from Khan Academy, is now used by over 2 million students nationwide. Teachers report that students using AI tutors for 30 minutes daily show an average improvement of 15 percentile points on standardized math assessments compared to control groups.
Despite the promising results, educators caution against viewing AI tutoring as a replacement for human teachers. The technology works best as a supplement that provides additional practice and immediate feedback, freeing teachers to focus on conceptual instruction and individualized support for struggling learners.
